Cervical smears are so important as they are one of the best ways to help protect you from cancer. Certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) cells in the cervix can cause abnormal changes which could lead to cancer. Having your cervical smear allows these cells to be detected and treated early, before they turn into cervical cancer.
